A typical door frame includes a gap between the 2x4 structural framing and the flat door jamb on which hinges and door latches are installed. This gap occurs when carpenters square the jamb within the rough door opening using wooden wedges. This gap means plate screws have a limited amount of material to grab, because screws that come with hinge and latch hardware are often less than 1" long.
